I have DMG files that are over 10 years old and open with no problem. I have never had a problem with DMG files nor with the older IMG files. That when Apple came out with the DMG file format (I believe it had another name). Way back when in the 90's we had a heck of a time getting a uncorrupted zip files over the internt. I have had more problems with DMG file (probably because of damage resourse forks which OSX no loger uses.) I'm sure Apple has over the years updated this and that to the DMG file format.

The DMG format goes back to OS X 1 (and possibly earlier). The entire zip file format(s) is(are) a hack and hacks have no place in archives. Among those are a number of different ways to store Mac resource data and metadata. There is no such thing as a standard zip file format. I have personally lost data by storing it in zip files.

If your not sending these apps to someone over the internet, zip files will work just fine. Never had a problem making zip file for use on my Mac in all these years.
